What are you listening to Part 'You Linear Thinkers ... Arrrghhh'

I haven't listened to Sweet Honey in the Rock in ages. Love them. One of the singer's daughters grew up to be an excellent artist in her own right, founder Bernice Johnson Reagon's daughter Toshi Reagon. Although I never did see Sweet Honey (had to cancel on a concert in Tokyo unfortunately), I did see Toshi perform at a brilliant Canada Day night in Central Park, NYC in 1999 where the consulate put on a tribute performance to Joni Mitchell.

"Joni Mitchell made an unscheduled guest appearance at an all-star concert honoring her 1970s "jazz period" in New York's Central Park on Thursday (July 1). She took the stage with Chaka Khan, Duncan Sheik, Joe Jackson, Eric Andersen, Jane Siberry, Toshi Reagon, PM Dawn, Ravi Coltrane, and many others for the closing number, "Help Me."

Producer Danny Kapilian described the event, Joni's Jazz, as "not a tribute concert in any real way. This is a celebration of a very specific period of music in Joni Mitchell's career." Presented as a part of Central Park's SummerStage outdoor concert series, it was threatened by the hissing of Central Park lawns -- a steady rain that ceased just minutes before the concert's start...

Mitchell was coaxed onstage for the closing number "Help Me." Cigarette in hand, she said, "I'm really speechless. I can't begin to describe the way I feel... I'll remember this all my life -- all my long life. With the stage crowded by all participating artists, Mitchell seemed reluctant to take the lead vocal away from Chaka Khan, who prompted her with, "Joni, sing. Sing, girl." Finally, Mitchell offered a few choruses of ethereal, wordless vocal lines to a swaying crowd that could not have adored her more."

Osman Kavala and the Snails: watch, enjoy, share

The world’s first lockdown opera, ten minutes of delight against oppression

quote:

In one country there is an injustice that symbolises the contest between hateful, polarising, elected despotism and truth and justice. The jailing of Osman Kavala in Turkey.

Kavala is Turkey's best-known supporter of culture. A philanthropist, human rights champion and bridge-builder to minority communities he has spent his whole life working for equality and respect for repressed peoples. He stands for the democratic and tolerant beliefs of probably now a majority of the population.

For this he is approaching 1000 days in Turkey’s highest security prison on trumped-up charges on the orders of President Erdoğan.

Not a fan of the hip hop style tune, but the imagery & message delivery is too powerful.

Santana : Live at the House of Blues Las Vegas: Anywhere You Want To Go

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

I was treated to a surprise date while in St. Pete's, Florida 5 years ago and it was a Santana concert with Carlos' daughter joining him on stage. It was an excellent performance and the Mahaffey Theatre (Center for the Arts) was a beautiful venue.

epaulo13

..i saw santana a few years ago at the gorge theatre. it's a concert stage south of osoyoos in washington. it overlooks a gorge and at the bottom runs the columbia river. i owned a volkswagon van at the time. :)

That looks amazing, Epaulo! I love destination outdoor concerts - I've done a few ski hill outdoor concerts in the Gatineaus (Camp Fortune) and Vermont (Stowe).

We Need a Socialist Spotify

Streaming services like Spotify shamelessly exploit musicians. But there is an alternative to corporate monopoly music: a music streaming platform built for the common good.

The current music streaming model was not built with artists in mind. (sgcdesignco / Unsplash)

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Can't Let Go
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FnJiwPpm2E

When Robert Plant and Alison Krauss met by chance in 2004, they were amazed to discover how perfectly the Led Zeppelin singer’s desert-rock grit complemented the contemporary bluegrass icon’s delicately exact soprano. Raise the Roof employs many of the same elements as the duo’s critically acclaimed 2007 album Raising Sand—blissful harmonies, gender-swapped covers of love songs, hazy folk atmospherics—but with an increased attention to the cultural history of the songs they’ve selected.

..txs laine

..there is a very interesting story to how this collaboration began that i watched way back when things began for them. there's a 3rd person involved..t-bone burnett who is the creative genius behind the krause and plant collaboration. also a producer in his own right and guitar player on a lot of their stuff.

..unfortunately the interview was done by charlie rose. and i won't bring that to babble.

..here you can can see t-bone on the 1st close up guitar shot.

Oh I do know T-Bone Burnett and in addition to his own music and producing, he has also been directing music for films and television. A very talented individual.

..that makes perfect sense now. from what i remember of the interview t-bone spoke of "real" american music and not the stuff in the mainstream. he described the collaboration of krause and plant as coming along only once in a while. and this part i'll never forget..he said like che and fidel. it was all music to my ears.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

That is a very cool statement. And it really is an amazing collaboration that was so surprising and yet brilliant.

Logan Staats - Deadman (Official Music Video)

"I wrote “Dead Man” while in rehab. It’s not about a girl. The culture is the love that I’m asking for. The love for myself. That was stolen from me - by the government, the crown, the church. When I sing “GIVE ME BACK MY LOVE”, I'm speaking about my culture, my pride, the love for myself.”

MegB

We were going throught a crate of our albums - or mostly ours. The Motorhead and Banjo for Parties albums were not ours. Some B-52s, Led Zepplin. And CCR - the first album Tommy Paine every bought. I sold most of my vinyl years ago and went cassette to CD to digital. When you move as much as I used to, it gets to be a pain in the arse, especially when you also have a shit ton of books.

What have I been listening to lately? A bit of Aretha. Oddly enough some Buzzcocks and Plastic Bertrand. My favourite Chopin prelude. Fleetwood Mac. Oh, and a few nights ago a pretty decent hard core band at the Richmond Tavern - first live music in two years. Just the right mixture of chaos and control. For all you colonial history nerds, the Richmond predates confederation by about 15 years.
