"A $5.2 billion cost increase for the Trans Mountain pipeline and tankers project will saddle taxpayers with an unacceptable burden if the project moves ahead, say lawyers at West Coast Environmental Law. Trans Mountain announced today that the projected cost for construction has risen to $12.6 billion - a dramatic 70% increase from recent estimates of $7.4 billion and even greater from the intial estimate of $5.4 billion in Kinder-Morgan's original application.
This cost is in addition to the $4.4 billion purchase price of the existing Trans Mountain pipeline, as well as a $600 million reserve recommended to cover potential contingencies, bringing the total cost to over $17 billion. 'For months, Canadians have been left wondering about the costs creeping up for this risky, uneconomic project. These new estimates should be a wake-up call for the federal government that it's time to walk away from Trans Mountain and focus on economic alternatives that actually make sense for taxpayers, communities and the environment,' said Eugene Kung, Staff Lawyer..."
These jaw-dropping estimates, in February have skyrocketed even more since. As well, international oil prices have plummeted even more below the 'break even' $75 per barrel price of the toxic low-grade heavily discounted tar-sands dilbit we ship. We're all being taken for a ride and should wake up and smell the coffee. Unfortunately, such things rarely happen in Canada.

Of course, convincing Justin Trudeau to defund Trans Mountain won’t happen overnight. But if the NDP brings the pipeline into their negotiations with Trudeau, it will force a national conversation about Canada’s post-pandemic priorities.
This is critical, since as we saw back in February when the cost of Trans Mountain rose, support for the project plummeted. One might hypothesize that, in the midst of a global pandemic, the public may be even less supportive of throwing billions at a pipeline instead of spending that money keeping our children, teachers and front-line workers safe.
SFU students get 13 student unions to sign anti-TMX letter
Thirteen groups representing 180,000 post-secondary students across the country are backing a call by SFU student groups for the federal government to reconsider the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
Students from the university have written a letter to the federal government, saying TMX is “not only unprofitable and unsustainable, but violates the sovereignty of the First Nations whose unceded ancestral lands the expansion trespasses.”
Thirteen student groups are listed among the 29 signatories on the letter, which was initiated by Justice, No Pipeline and DogwoodSFU.Among the signatories are the SFU Graduate Student Society and the Society of Arts and Social Sciences.
The student groups are backed by, among others, SFU’s faculty association, the Sustainabiliteens, the Wilderness Committee, Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion and the Green Party leadership campaign of former Burnaby North-Seymour candidate Amita Kuttner. Student unions from McMaster, Concordia and McGill universities have also signed on.
“As part of the project, the Burnaby Mountain Tank Farm facility is also set to expand, which poses a huge risk to the thousands of students at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Burnaby Mountain residents,” the letter reads.
“The environmental risks related to potential spills along the pipeline and increased tanker traffic on the coast include the devastation of nearby communities and wildlife.”
It also notes the route crosses delicate spaces, including the Lightning Rock burial site of the Sumas First Nation and the Coldwater Indian Band’s aquifer.
“Indigenous leaders in B.C. and all across Canada have been very vocal in opposition of the pipeline expansion, yet the Canadian government is violating the rights of the First Nations on whose stolen and unceded lands the pipeline is being built,” said SFSS president Osob Mohamed in a written statement.....
Sri Lanka tanker fire: Blazing ship towed away from coast amid oil spill fears
An oil tanker that caught fire on Thursday is being towed away from the east coast of Sri Lanka amid fears of a spill.
The tanker, the MT New Diamond, is carrying nearly two million barrels - 270,000 tonnes - of crude oil.
There are fears of significant environmental damage if the vessel explodes, or if there's a spill.
Dharshani Lahandapura, the chair of Sri Lanka's Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA), warned "it could be a huge environmental disaster for the whole world"....

Weak oil demand forecasts leave economists wondering if Trans Mountain makes sense
Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has talked about using the revenue from the Trans Mountain oil pipeline to pay for green energy projects. But what if that revenue never comes because there’s little demand for oil in the first place?
This week, three big names in the energy world all made bold predictions of a much-diminished future for oil. The large energy company BP shocked analysts when it said it expects oil demand to peak this decade, and never recover, even before factoring in government actions to cut carbon pollution.
Meanwhile, both the Paris-based International Energy Agency and the 13-nation oil export group OPEC slashed their oil demand forecasts, citing a weaker rebound from the COVID-19 economic slowdown than had been expected.
In an open letter to Wilkinson and other cabinet ministers that was published on Thursday, more than 100 Canadian economists and policy experts pointed to the flurry of recent oil market predictions, calling into question the economic viability of the government-owned oil pipeline and its contentious expansion project.
“For a long time, ‘peak oil’ was peak supply — we didn’t have enough oil. And now it’s peak demand, and the reason for that is climate change,” said Thomas Gunton, director of resource and environmental planning at Simon Fraser University, and a former B.C. deputy minister of environment, in an interview.
“It’s unprecedented, really, for one of the largest oil companies in the world to come out with a forecast as pessimistic as BP’s.”
Gunton and other signatories to the letter — including Canada research chairs Carolyn Fischer, Kyla Tienhaara and Nicholas Rivers, former World Bank adviser David Wheeler, and former BC Hydro CEO Marc Eliesen — also point out that, at the same time oil markets are weakening, the cost of the expansion project has climbed.
“We are concerned that the decline in world oil markets and the escalating construction costs have undermined the viability of TMX and put taxpayers’ money at risk,” reads the letter. “Your government has not provided an updated evaluation to justify this investment in light of these deteriorating conditions.”
The authors said they recognize that Albertans are suffering due to the drop in oil prices, and deserve support. But they urged the federal government to choose “more effective ways of directly assisting workers in the oil sector,” such as expanding a program to clean up orphaned and inactive oil and gas wells.
“Trans Mountain is still in its very early stages of development, and so it’s still an opportunity to do a re-evaluation,” said Gunton. “You (the federal government) have a basic obligation to provide a due diligence business case to the public to justify investment of taxpayer funds.”....
UN Tells Canada to Stop Building the Trans Mountain Pipeline
First Nations folks have urged Canada to stop building the Trans Mountain Pipeline, which carries crude and refined oil from Alberta to British Columbia, for years. A new United Nations report is backing them up.
The UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has ordered Canada to halt construction on the pipeline unless officials obtain informed consent from impacted Indigenous peoples, saying the projects would “cause irreparable harm to indigenous peoples rights, culture, lands, territories and way of life.” Fifty percent of the proposed route for the Trans Mountain Pipeline is on Secwepemc territory.
“We have un-ceded land, which means we have never signed treaties with the federal government,” Kanahus Manuel, one of the Indigenous activists who brought the human rights violations to the UN CERD’s attention, told Earther. “We’ve never signed our land away, we have rights to it ... so self-determination for our people must be respected.”

Alberta’s energy minister Sonya Savage said the UN has no business criticizing Canada’s energy megaprojects, which she says most First Nations groups support. “With all the injustice in the world, it’s beyond rich that the unelected, unaccountable United Nations would seemingly single out Canada—one of the greatest champions of human rights, democracy and the rule of law,” she said in a statement.
But the CERD report says Canada’s legal practices for obtaining consent from Indigenous communities don’t meet global human rights standards. “By UN standards, there is no consent for this pipeline [from the land’s] rightful titleholders,” said Manuel.

TMX is a federal project opposed by the federal NDP. Coastal Gas is the provincial pipeline that the BC NDP has subsidized and fast tracked. John Horgan is an arrogant, unscrupulous, back stabbing politician. Gord Johns MP is the most effective legislator in the House and has gotten much needed bills passed. EMay spent a lifetime being sanctimonious and devoid of real solutions to local environmental issues.
The federal NDP has always been about the MP's not the leader. People in BC elect federal NDP MP's despite the abysmal leadership not because any of the leaders in this century have excited us. We do send strong outspoken men and women to Ottawa because of our political history and culture, which is not the same as Ontario's or Quebec's or the Maritimes or the Prairies. Lascaris is the only politician I know of promoting 100% tax on income over 500 million a year. That doesn't seem particularly capitalist to me. He is the only politician I know of that wants us to return to borrowing at 0% interest from the Bank of Canada. The grassroots of the Greens are much farther left than May even if they arn't all the way to ecosocialist dominated YET. ..it's too early to say lascaris means change. you are basing it on hope. while there are movements in the midst of some of the most ferocious struggles for the environment..in the here and now. against some of the biggest and most powerful corporations in the world.

An Ecosocialist Look At The Green Party Leadership Race
The push to elect an ecosocialist leader of the federal Green Party signals a growing understanding that capitalism is the root cause of climate change. This is an encouraging development, and we hope this initiative succeeds.
We know the struggle to build a post-capitalist world is a long term project, even though catastrophic harms caused by climate change are happening right now. Many people all over the world are committed to building a sustainable world for us all. For a project so massive in scope, effective strategy is essential.
Because of the critical stakes at play, we need to consider seriously what gains can be made by a federal Green Party with an ecosocialist at the helm.

Yes there are movements and I have supported them. I'm feeling discouraged on TMX but I am still holding out hope that it and Keystone XL will be stopped. Unfortunately Russia and Saudi Arabia and other countries also have plenty of oil and there is no one to stop them. The only way will be pricing them out of the market by cheap green energy. It doesn't need to be an either or situation between movements and political parties. They are not mutually exclusive.
I am absolutely placing my hope on Lascaris eventually leading the party but even while he isn't the leader he is still preparing the ground for the moment of awakening but he needs support for that to happen.
By moment of awakening I am referring to the moment when enough of the war generation and older boomers have died off and a critical mass of younger voters become the majority coupled with ever more shocking disasters.
If we are not ready for it with a party for people to vote for the far right could rise with the notion we have to join with the states to protect North America from the hoards of climate refugees.
In fact the left has aready failed to take advantage of populist disastisfaction with current government failures. Instead the right gets all the support because all the left does is lecture people. I went to two Canadian socialist websites. Waste of time. It's all philosophy and academics and worker power. So great. Rah rah. Now what? Go on some small demonstrations and hope someone notices? Hand out pamphets?
Eventually movements need political power or they just stay fringe even if they manage to stop a pipeline or two. That is a really good thing and an impressive accomplishment against massive multinational companies but it won't save the planet.

It's a lot easier to change a power structure when you are in control of it. A new structure will never grow powerful enough to replace the existing world order while the old exists.
People still have the power of the vote. The problem is that we are not voting in self-interest, we only think we are. We are comfortable so we allow ourselves to be deceived.
So far it is the far right that has the foresight to be prepared to take political advantage of of whatever happens. If we are not politically prepared to offer an alternative then far right politicians promising salvation will rise.
Lascaris hasn't even won the leadership of the party so he won't be PM anytime soon. He is still the first leader in my lifetime that I believe can change the world if he becomes PM.

Permanent protest camp established near Trans Mountain work site in Kamloops
Secwépemc protesters have settled in for the long haul in a bid to stop the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project from being completed in Kamloops.
On Saturday (Oct. 3), a group of about 20 people set up what they call a permanent camp along the shores of the Thompson River, off Mission Flats Road and near a pipeline worksite.
The encampment is located in the same area where a Secwépemc man held a vision quest and fast in protest of the pipeline at the end of August.
Miranda Dick, a spokesperson for the camp, told KTW the sole goal of the encampment is to stop the pipeline twinning project.
Asked what protesters are prepared to do to achieve that, Dick replied: “Everything.”

Working to take over government takes nothing away from people taking a different approach. People aren't just demonstrating. They are also appealing to the courts and international institutions.

Here's my basic notes from today's Zoom meeting to support the Secwepemc camp up around Kamloops in the path of TMX.
They hope to have a website up in the next couple of days with more clarity on the asks:

That doesn't mean I am against the movement particularly in the context of the comment/thread which was praising Lascaris for being able to reach people. It isn't the movement I am against it is the inability or disinterest to speak to people who are not academics. Maybe the sites are intended to reach out to other activists not regular people. This is how the right gets away with calling leftists elitist.
Concerning the hereditary chiefs they made a secret deal with the provincial and federal governments. Because of the objections, which I supported, they changed their tune.

After years spent fighting for their voices to be heard in the Coastal GasLink pipeline dispute, Wet’suwet’en matriarchs and chiefs both for and against the project got to sit down with hereditary chiefs and government ministers at Thursday’s historic meeting.
The women gained their seats after complaining earlier that they were being locked out of the discussions, with the anger among both sides turning towards each other outside the meeting hall.
So yes, when they were being secretive and wouldn't let other stakeholders, particular matriarchs, in on the meetings or deals they were making. Yes, I questioned their motives because it looked like a power grab.

Five people including a Secwepemc hereditary chief and his daughter have been arrested after standing against construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project on Secwepemc territory in Kamloops, B.C.
A statement from the Sacred Woman's Fire Council said the group was arrested near a work site on Mission Flats Road on Thursday as pipeline crews prepared to drill underneath the Thompson River.
Those arrested include Hereditary Chief Segwses, Loralie Dick, April Thomas, Billie Pierre and Romilly Cavanaugh, the latter of whom is a former engineer for the Trans Mountain pipieline.

The project is tripling the capacity of the existing pipeline from the Edmonton area to the Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby, B.C. The portion of the pipeline in the B.C. Interior is being expanded from Kamloops to the summit of the Coquihalla Highway.
Crews are drilling under the Thompson River to pull the pipe through to the other side as part of the regional pipeline expansion. Work in Kamloops began in June.
Time for all those who profess to recognize the critical importance of defeating this ecocidal pipeline project to put their money where their mouths are and stand with/support those on the TMX frontline.
