Sex work law Charter Challenge

https://globalnews.ca/news/9171536/sex-workers-criminal-laws-court-chall...

The Canadian Alliance for Sex Work Law Reform is now arguing the new laws are more restrictive than what they replaced and continue to criminalize sex work.

It says the new laws foster stigma, invite targeted violence and remove safe consent.

Michael Rosenberg said in court Monday that the laws making it illegal to advertise or communicate about buying or selling sexual services are “unacceptably dangerous,” in part because they prevent health and safety checks, or meaningful conversations about consent, from happening.

“They should be able to have a discussion about consent that is legal and they can’t have that discussion within the bounds of (the law),” he said. “If they do anyways, someone is willing to break the law, that’s no good. And more often than not, they don’t have (consent) because of the law. That’s no good either.”

The alliance also argues the new laws violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I hope the challenge succeeds, Susan. It should be clear to all by now that these laws are not protecting sex workers, and - in fact - were never intended to.

People in my neighbourhood are still reeling from the unsolved pre-dawn murder a few months ago of a sex worker who was beloved by many in the community.

I am so sorry to hear that and yes.... I hope we can once and for all be recognized as full citizens entitled to rights....

we are currently dealing with a multitude of legislations aimed at targeting on-line sex work however so it's not clear if the fight will be over after this round....

I am really exhausted from all of it and now we have had a criminal posing as a sex worker,  drugging clients and robbing them one of whom has died.... His family are devstated.... the thiefs charges are up to 30 now but it is of little conselation to sex workers who are now facing even more increased reluctance from clients to take part in screening processes as a result of this..... with the criminalization of sex buyers and the increasing violence they face... it was really only a matter of time...
