Some folks in the trucker convoy have it right: stop importing oil; use Canada’s oil for Canadians. Taking this road, we can avoid export, keep the price for Canadians low, and lose no oil patch jobs.
We can refine tar sands bitumen on site to bring quality and price up to par. We can avoid using taxpayer money and diminishing resources to build export facilities, pipelines, and tankers to give life support to a dying fossil economy.
We can avoid the economic, social, and environmental costs of inevitable oil spills. Instead, we can use our money and worker expertise to upgrade our internal pipelines and delivery systems, and our disaster response capacity. We can leave some oil for our children.
Export is all about global oil company competition and maximum profits. The Trudeau government can regain public confidence by serving the people instead of “the shadow government: the corporate world”.
