..season 3 finds "paper boi" and the gang in europe. with all the humour, weirdness and disasters that comes with it. one of the (consistently) best shows around with season 4 coming out in the not so distant future.

Atlanta

Earn and his cousin Alfred, based in Atlanta, try to make their way in the world through the rap scene. Along the way they come face-to-face with social and economic issues touching on race, relationships, poverty, status, and parenthood.

Oh I have that recorded and have to catch up to that.

I started a great Australian series called "BUMP". Best described as a dramedy but very strong out of the gate.

I have started watching a Korean show on Netflix called Extraordinary Attorney Woo. The show revolves around the lead character being autistic and intelligent. However it delves into the societal norms around disability especially in the episode,"This Is Pengsoo" where she represents another autistic person with an intellectual disability. It is extremely well done and has given me some insight into Korean society and its legal system.

Young-woo works on a case involving two brothers, one a brilliant medical student at SNU, the other, an autistic with the capacity of a six to ten year old. Their parents come home to find the autistic son apparently attacking the other son, who dies. The young man had a blood alcohol level of .30, multiple broken ribs, and a faint mark on his neck. The autistic son is charged for the attack. The father is a Hanbada client and asks them to handle the defense. Hoping her autism might help with communication, Myung-seok's team, including Young-woo, are assigned to the case. During their investigation, the team learns that the deceased brother had attempted suicide multiple times and they develop the theory that the autistic brother was attempting to perform CPR, resulting in the broken ribs of the deceased. The parents, however, cannot accept that their brilliant son was that unhappy, and they wish to suppress any information about suicide attempts. In court, the prosecution attempts to use Young-woo's obviously high-functioning autism to argue against diminished capacity for the defendant. It is asked that Young-woo be removed from the case, and the case is assigned to the team of another senior attorney. Distraught about these developments, Young-woo attempts suicide by hanging in her office. Lee Joon-ho catches her in the act and saves her. They fall to the floor and the impact gives Young-woo an insight into how the deceased had gotten broken ribs on the back of his rib cage. Back in court, these arguments are advanced and the charges are reduced to bodily injury and the autistic son is ruled as mentally incompetent. Following these developments, Young-woo composes a letter of resignation, cleans out her office, removes the nameplate from her door, and leaves Hanbada Law Firm.

..i've been watching attorney woo as well. i'm up to the 12th epi and still enjoying it. 4 mor epi's to go.

eta: south korea is a very patriarchal society. the 12th epi involved fighting for women's rights which is an uphill battle. something young attorney woo just learned about via her firm's involvement in.

I watch a lot of foreign shows because even if TV is not exact it can give insights into other cultures. Servant of the People was another show I liked because it highlighted what a corrupt oligarchy run "democracy" Ukraine was. That show is one of the reasons I have a hard time with the NATO narrative that Ukraine was ever a functioning democracy. The EU did not accept them because of the corruption. Zelensky did not fix any of the problems so when the war started it is clear Ukraine was not really a democracy in any real sense of the word. I know that because Zelensky told me so and the Ukrainian people showed they agreed by voting for him.

.agreed! and political perspectives. borgen was a great show for doing just that. it mirrored denmarks's social democrats move to the right.

I liked Borgen for exactly the same reason.

Truth to the Powerless: An Investigation into Canada's Foreign Policy (docu)

https://www.truthtothepowerless.com

Six part documentary series which seeks to explore the role Canada's foreign policy has played in the international arena since the post-WWII era...

This looks interesting. And anything that helps mitigate the present obvious ignorance about the topic is an urgent and necessary precondition to changing the appalling status quo.

Action flicks aren't normally my thing, but I did enjoy Prey, the latest (and perhaps best) film in the Predator franchise.

This film completely upends the context of previous Predator movies by setting the story in early eighteenth century North America and in a Comanche tribe who encounter a Predator at the same time they are trying to protect themselves from colonizers. It pits the Predator against one of the most dedicated warrior cultures in our own history and the results are astoundingly rich and exciting.

The protagonist is Naru, played by Amber Midthunder in a star-making turn, an intelligent healer in her village, but quite adept at tracking -longing to be a hunter like her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers).

..yes, prey has it's moments.

..finally completed the final season of better call saul. i felt nostalgic seeing walter, pinkman and saul together even if it was for just a moment. it was 2008 when breaking bad came out. long time ago. and i thought it was a good ending to the saul show.

..what's next? well a new season of the good fight and handmaid's tale will come out next month. looking forward to those.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

Oh my, that is almost a spoiler. I have to catch up and watch "Better Call Saul" that I have taped.

I still have to finish "BUMP" and "Trying" and I also have "Bad Sisters" lined up.

epaulo13

..this show is very much a comedy..a dark one with a touch of a past reality. a well done one about stasi and the fall of east germany. with a weird cast of characters. there's a trailer you can watch if you follow the link.

Kleo

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, a former spy killer is set free and embarks on a revenge spree against the people who conspired to betray her.

epaulo13

..i must have started watching this at least half doz times. finally got past the 1st epi and it's turning out to be a really good series.

..it's kind of a mini series with 2 seasons made up of 4 1hr epis per season. a dark comedy with games within wheels within schemes. :)

Guilt

S1: Brothers accidentally run over and kill an old man. They cover their tracks, but their lives start to fall apart when neighbors and relatives of the dead doubt the way he died. S2: The aftermath of S1, when the guilty leaves prison.

I've heard good things about "Guilt". I finally burned through "The Bear" and it was worth it - the reviews were pretty spot on.

Thanks for the update on Handmaids Tale epaulo13. I knew they had shot another season here in TO and wondered where it had gotten to. Will look forward to that.

Now on final season of The Walking Dead. What a dark and cruel fantasy world the American psyche can conjur on the total apocalyptic collapse of society and the plague of zombified monsters that once were human but now attack and devour the flesh of any that remain so. If other humans don't kill them first.

The 'Whisperers' that infiltrate, weaponize and steer the zombie herds for their own strategic objectives is one element that is particularly resonant as a metaphor for mass-media manipulation.

Can only do a couple of episodes of this dystopia at a time - too dark and gory. But certainly serves to distract one from the sometimes awful present of our own time. What a piece of work.

epaulo13

..the 2nd season came out aug 3rd. and i have just got around to watching it. all 10 epis are out now of course and they are the same top quaility as the 1st season. i heard a 3rd season will come out in '23.

I just watched Dave Zirin's new documentary, Behind the Shield: The Power and Politics of the NFL. It's quite good, and is being streamed for free for what Dave described as "an extremely limited time". Don't sleep on it.

I rewatched "Rumble" last night because a friend who is visiting hadn't seen it. It is superb mix of North American music and indigenous history. Its on the Knowledge network, streamed for free. The accounts don't cost anything except a plea for donations.

"Many artists and musical forms played a role in the creation of rock, but Native American influence is an integral part of music history - despite attempts to erase Indigenous culture."

Have recently been re-watching a number of John Sayles' films; have seen all of his movies and loved nearly all of them. He hasn't made a new one in nearly a decade, so maybe he's finally hanging up his hat, though I hope he has at least a couple more in him.

Lone Star (1996) is probably his best, but Matewan (1987) isn't far behind.

Although I haven't seen him mentioned on this site (or board) before, I'd be surprised if he didn't have quite a few fans here.

Yep. Matewan is a true masterpiece.

The Seeds Of Vandana Shiva

Vandana Shiva is a modern-day revolutionary, and for forty years has been fighting a heroic battle on behalf of humanity and the ecologically besieged natural systems that support us. But she is opposed by powerful multinational corporations invested in continuing their degenerative but lucrative agricultural practices. By profiling one of the greatest activists of modern times, the film looks at the epic struggle over who controls the world’s food systems, and asks the question, who will prevail?.....

I'm not sure this is the right place to put this, but I couldn't find a better one. This week, Mehdi Hasan did the most amazing takedown I have ever seen. Matt Taibbi tried and mostly failed to justify his actions on the "twitter files" matter. Taibbi appeared totally unprepared, while Hasan had all the relevant documents to prove his case queued up and ready to be shown. An utter disaster for Taibbi's credibility, in my opinion.

6079_Smith_W

Great piece IMO,and thanks for posting. I will be sharing this.

Nice to watch him squirm, and great job on Hasan's part separating legitimate concerns from tin foil hat stuff.

There really is a distinction between politics and manipulation and lies. And one should be more furious with those who use lies in causes we agree with.

As an aside, I wonder how Chomsky felt about his maxim being used in that way.

So here's another vintage video clip. It's an interview of Frank Zappa by Larry King on CNN sometime during the Reagan years. Priceless.
