Today in the United Nations General Assembly, a cross-regional group of states affirmed the principles of universal human rights by blocking a hostile attempt to prevent the work established by the UN Human Rights Council of the Independent Expert on Discrimination and Violence based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.

I made a comment on another site (outside of babble) that address that Smith, so it occurs to me, why not plagarize myself...
It is way past time to put an end to the farce that the Vatican is a state (even a mini-state). Vatican Nuncios (their term for "ambassador") should be invited in for a meeting with the head of state of whichever country is hosting them and they should be politely told their services no longer are needed. Then strip Observer status from the organization (RCC, Vatican, Holy See... pick your label) as a whole from the UN and other international bodies. It is not like the Chief Rabbi of Israel gets special recognition, nor any Council of Imams, Mullahs or whatever.

I'll take that as an excuse to self-plagarize from another thread....
In an unusual move, the 54-national African Group opposed the creation of the role, to investigate human rights violations against Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people.
But a group of Latin American countries, supported by many western states, sought to block the African draft in its original form during Monday's session. Their amendment gutted the original resolution.
In Monday's vote by most of the committee's 193-members, the amendment received 84 votes in favor, 77 against and 17 abstentions....
Russia and Egypt, speaking on behalf of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation, said they would not recognize the mandate of the gay rights investigator and would not cooperate with Muntarbhorn.

Good thing the vote got in before Trump, who might have allied with Russia against LGBT+ rights. Thanks goodness for the Latin American group.
In 2014, UN chief Ban Ki-moon said the UN would recognize all same-sex marriages of its staff, allowing them to receive UN benefits. Russia unsuccessfully tried to overturn it last year, with Saudi Arabia, China, Iran, India, Egypt, Pakistan and Syria among 43 states that supported Moscow.
