Truly the beautiful game!

Manchester City (MC) behind 2-0, scores 3 goals in about 5 minutes, to defeat Aston Villa 3-2

MC Premier League Champions beating Liverpool by 1 point!

I was hoping Liverpool could come out on top to keep alive their chances at winning a historic quadruple. They can still win a remarkable treble if the can beat Real Madrid this Saturday in this year's culminating game - the Champions Final!

FIFA to announce 2026 World Cup host cities on June 16; CBC; May 20, 2022

FIFA will announce its host cities for the 2026 World Cup on June 16 with Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver the three Canadian options waiting to hear their name.

In all, 22 candidate cities have raised their hand to stage matches for the expanded 48-team men's tournament that will be hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

While the number of host cities was initially pegged at 16, FIFA's chief tournaments and events officer said the final number has not been defined.

“We'll wrap up these visits and then we'll decide what's the most appropriate number that we need to host the tournament," Colin Smith said during a visit to Toronto last November.

There is no room for international goodwill in Pax Americana and its vassal states.

Even during the height of the Cold War, we got to experience the Canada-Soviet hockey games. It was considered a resounding success. For sure sports can bring out a tribal ferocity but it can also be a bridge to opening dialogue and encouraging mutual respect in pursuing the love of the game. I believe that was the point of the Olympic games among other international sporting evetns.

Vancouver to be 2026 FIFA World Cup host city: reports; Vancouver Sun; June 9, 2022

Vancouver and Toronto will be the two Canadian hosts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup along with 14 American and Mexican cities.

It looks like Vancouver will be included as a 2026 FIFA World Cup host city when tournament organizers confirm their final list of 16 locations on June 16.

According to two well-sourced reporters, Vancouver and Toronto will be the two Canadian host cities. Both were included, along with Edmonton, in the long list of 22 cities under consideration.

Mexico City is also expected to be selected as a host city and may be the only Mexican location on the final list. (Monterrey and Guadalajara were both included on the long list of candidates.)

Vancouver was originally out of the running after the B.C. government spoke out in 2018 against FIFA’s proposed host city terms, but the door was never fully closed and negotiations continued over the years.

Last summer, B.C. Premier John Horgan first hinted that the province had been approached about getting Vancouver back in the candidate city mix.

According to the Fourth Period’s Irfaan Gaffar, Vancouver’s selection was independent of the decision to drop Edmonton, which lost out to American candidates.
Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium also came up short as a facility, according to TransferMarkt’s Victoria-based correspondent Manuel Veth.

PavCo, the provincial Crown corporation that operates B.C. Place Stadium, confirmed to Postmedia in April that it would install a grass surface for the World Cup, should Vancouver be selected as a host city.

PavCo installed a new $3.1 million artificial surface earlier this year, one that is approved for use by FIFA, as well as World Rugby and the CFL.

Toronto, Vancouver selected among host cities for 2026 World Cup; CBC; June 16, 2022

--------

Vancouver's B.C. Place and Toronto's BMO Field will host games during the 2026 World Cup, FIFA announced on Thursday.

The tournament will take place across Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. The other Canadian city in the running was Edmonton.

In addition to Toronto and Vancouver, 16 American regions and three Mexican sites were selected.

The number of games and exact schedules will be announced at a later date, but with the expanded field, the 2026 World Cup will feature a total of 80 matches, up from the 64 that will be played at Qatar 2022 this fall. Sixty of those matches will be played in the US, including everything from the quarterfinals forward.

In Mexico, the cities chosen were Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City (the nearby Meadowlands, NJ), Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle will host the matches played in the US.

The 2026 World Cup will be the third played in North America and first since United States 1994. The 1986 World Cup, Canada’s only appearance at the quadrennial event prior to 2022, was held in Mexico.

All of North America is hosting - wow, that will be costly for fans and believe it or not, there are diehard fans who are not one percenters. I am not sure if there have been any other FIFA World Cups that had games spread across 16 cities.

JKR

The vast majority of fans are definitely not one percenters. I think the 2026 World Cup will be a big international celebration that will hopefully bring the world closer together. "Fan festival" sites will also be added in host cities and other cities to include more people and more cultural events.

Banning Russia has turned this event into another extension of the US's cold war against Russia. Dividing the world into camps is the opposite of bringing it together.

JKR

Russia's actions have turned Russia into a pariah state for now but hopefully by 2026 they will be acting in such a way that the international community will allow them to participate in events like the World Cup, Olympics. Expos, and other international gatherings.

We shouldn’t let Russia’s actions put a damper on international gatherings and festivals.

kropotkin1951

Russia is a pariah state to Western countries . You seem to think that the white world is the world.

JKR

Is the World Cup just a part of the "white world?" Russia has been banned from international football (soccer). I think international football is much bigger than just the "white world."

kropotkin1951

If you think that the sports federations are not run by same the people that voted for sanctions then you are delusional. Could you please post a link to explain the democratic process used to eject Russia and which countries voted for it.

JKR

You can Google it but if I remember correctly FIFA's President and the six Confederation Presidents of international football make these kinds of decisions for FIFA. The president of UEFA makes decisions about Russian football within European football . The President of the Russian football association makes decisions regarding Russian domestic football. So Russia has been banned from international football and European football.

kropotkin1951

What good do you think this will do for anyone in the world. Will it promote peace? Why do you think collective punishment is something that should only be applied to Russia but not other countries. Why do you not want Saudi Arabia and Israel and the US  banned for their illegal military incursions in other peoples sovereign states. I think that the worlds organizations should use the same set of rules for all countries.

JKR

The world's organizations do what's in their best interests. Obviously FIFA believes banning Russia is in their best interests because many people in the world are disgusted by Russia's actions and having Russia at the World Cup would likely spoil their sporting event. FIFA understandably wants to produce a wonderful World Cup that will produce entertainment and happiness for billions of people.  Having Russia appear at the games would have led to many people criticizing and boycotting the World Cup including soccer players, soccer teams, soccer federations, soccer fans, the media, World Cup sponsors, etc... I think FIFA feels they have to put the interests of football first. Personally I'm hoping Qatar 2022 is the best World Cup yet! And of course the 2026 games here in North America will be an unbelievably amazing sporting event for our whole continent!

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

A lot of nations around the world, save for the Coalition of the Willing, were disgusted by the 2003 US invasion of Iraq. Luckily for FIFA, there was no event until 2006 where US qualified. But realistically, I doubt the US would ever be denied ANYTHING.

Interestingly many of the best players in the world are not playing in the World Cup as their teams did not qualify for the World Cup.

The World Cup Should Make Us Rethink Our Understanding of Human Rights

BY

NEIL VALLELLY

Media coverage of the World Cup has rightly highlighted the atrocious working conditions of migrant workers. But we need to broaden our definition of human rights abuses to include the global economic system that forces them to go to Qatar in the first place.

I can't bear to watch it (dead workers). While I enjoyed many a calcio match while studying, researching and interpreting in Italy, I'm thrilled that the Italian side was excluded. I loathe the neofascist Meloni with all my soul (let you imagine the violent fantasies..)

You can imagine how my friends in Italy are feeling.

Qatar

In the 21st century, Qatar emerged as a middle power in the Arab world through its resource-wealth,[24][25] as well as its globally expanding media group, Al Jazeera Media Network, and reportedly supporting several rebel groups financially during the Arab Spring.[26][27][28] Qatar forms part of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Qatar's human rights record has been regarded by academics and non-governmental organisations as being generally poor, with restrictions on civil liberties such as the freedoms of associationexpression and the press, as well as its treatment of thousands of migrant workers amounting to forced labour for projects in the country.[29][30] The 2022 FIFA World Cup was awarded to Qatar under controversial circumstances, making it the first Arab country and the first in the Middle East to host the event.[31] Qatar hosted the 2006 Asian Games, and will also host the 2030 Asian Games.[32]

Great game today ending up tied 1-1 between Equador and Netherlands. Equador actually scored 2 goals but one of them didn't count because one of their players was offside. Equador had more energy thoughout and deserved to win.

Equador's star player and their only goal scorer today, Antonio Valencia, was taken off the pitch in a stretcher, near the end of the match - hopefully he will be ok to continue playing in the World Cup.
