My wife and our adult grand daughter get together once a week to paint and draw. They have been doing Bob Ross lessons the last few weeks. They are both very talented but I can't even draw a stick figure well.

That sounds very interesting. I've been watching Bob Ross videos as well, but I use a different medium. Perhaps I may venture into oil or watercolour someday. Or maybe even sketching.

This brings to mind pleasant memories of the smell of linseed oil, always present when my mom was painting with oils. This small delight was lost with the move to acrylic.

Buy one of those old magic bag heat packs, if you miss the smell of rancid linseed (and it is kind of a nice smell, in fact).
Funny that smell is most closely connected to memory.

Was gonna start huffing the stuff, but I'll try your suggestion. Yup, smell is hugely evocative, and it brings back such immersive memories. Puts me right beside her mixing colours, and explaining what she was doing. She was actually quite good.

My dad painted too. I can, but really the passion for it skipped a generation.
