therapy sessions

I've noticed a proliferation of therapy-like offerings in social media groups that cost a low amount of money (5-20$) to join online chat groups for an hour.

They're hosted by persons with modest professional training but nothing close to the requirement to meet a provinces' counseling association.

examples I've seen; A student enrolled in a diploma mill counseling program, or a hypnotherapist or other quasi 100-200hrs of online education professional.

I know there's a long standing issue with counseling inaffordability; and everyone who has their degree probably likes to keep it that way with a week of pro bono each year to show they still have a heart.

I did find a PTSD group advertised as 'free' and it turned out to be a Scientology recruitment group, replete with actors who surrendered their personal information at the speakers request with little to no interaction to so participants can receive their free personalized therapy sessions in the coming days.

anyone know safer options than what's out there

Hi Ryan,

This isn't exactly what you're looking for but studies have shown that just talking to someone can be up to 80% as effective as talking to trained professionals. Obviously, it would be case-dependent on your background issues and injuries but there are a lot of support groups out there and it's just people talking. Reddit has a bunch of online ones and if you find a sub that discusses your issues they'll often have links and directions for in-person support groups.

You're definitely not wrong about the proliferation of therapy-like offerings in social media, it's a real cash-cow.

I know that most psychiatrists have moved out of the talk therapy realm but there are still some around and more importantly, psychiatric services are covered by health insurance. This lack of insured therapy services is a hole in our universal health care system and I believe psychologist that provide therapy (many of them excellent) charge at minimum $100 an hour. That's a lot when we all know a one off or even 3 sessions is not going to help much.
