Media needs to be shut down if they refuse to stop publicizing and almost glamourizing violence. But with such enormous problems can and/or should the white male species be allowed to continue to participate feeely in our society.

The definition of a species is “individuals who are able to produce offspring with one another.” Males by definition are not a species.

How should white males be stopped from participating freely in our society?

Meanwhile some irresponsible media were suggesting terrorism, and any media that did that need to be severely fined and hopefully shut down for good. The media which obviously is an important part of society, is as well a large part of the problem, and are contributing to the violence.

Copenhagen mall shooting: Suspect had mental health issues

Police say the suspect who was arrested after killing at least three people at a mall had mental health issues.

I, welcome the days were only government approved sources provide us the news.

The government shutting down the media and the government not allowing white men to participate freely in society does sound dystopian rather than utopian. Luckily at least to most people.

Amazing.

What should we do with the white males? Castrate them and send them to an island? Just kill them?

Police announced they had captured a suspect in a shooting on Monday that killed six people and wounded more than 36 when a man with a high-powered rifle opened fire from a rooftop at a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park.

Police confirmed they captured 22-year-old Robert E. Crimo III, who was from the area.

How many white male shooters have we had so far this week, and it's only Monday nite, eh!

Pondering

The question is what is being done to white men to drive them into suicidal killing rages that end their own lives. Assuming we all agree that race is a social construct white men aren't born to commit mass murder.

I believe patriarchy is the issue but it is not something the left genuinely wants to dismantle.  Dismantling the patriarchy is a feminist issue not a progressive or leftist issue.

Funny, how no one talks about the average three people killed in Chicago each day. I have seen stats that for everyone person killed, there is another four or five people injured.

An average weekend seen 10 people killed and 30 injured. Where is the outcry?

The majority killed and injured are black.

It is obvious that Chicago has no effective gun laws of any kind. I guess his father was not the family member that was worried about his threats of violence to himself and others. Or maybe his father was hoping he would commit suicide. Totally unhinged from the perspective of any life experience of mine.

The assault happened less than three years after police went to the suspect’s home following a call from a family member who said he was threatening “to kill everyone” there. Covelli said police confiscated 16 knives, a dagger and a sword, but said there was no sign he had any guns at the time, in September 2019.

Police in April 2019 also responded to a reported suicide attempt by the suspect, Covelli said.

The suspect legally purchased the rifle used in the attack in Illinois within the past year, Covelli said. In all, police said, he purchased five firearms, which were recovered by officers at his father’s home.

The revelation about his gun purchases is just the latest example of young men who were able to obtain guns and carry out massacres in recent months despite glaring warning signs about their mental health and inclination to violence.

Illinois state police, who issue gun owners’ licenses, said the gunman applied for a license in December 2019, when he was 19. His father sponsored his application.

Another white male shooting.

Jonathan Sapirman, 20, opened fire at a crowded mall with an AR15.

Elisjsha Dicken, 22 with no police or military training, pulled out a legally owned pistol and shot and killed the gunman in 15 seconds (not the 2 minutes that the CNN wrote)

Good Samaritan with a gun.

In the same weekend in Chicago, 8 people were killed and 17 others wounded including a 17-year-old girl killed. But that's not news worthy.

Here are the stats on 316 mass shootings: 10 of 316 (3.16%) in the US involved a good guy with a gun shooting a bad guy with a gun; every other method of ending this was more effective as the following chart shows. Furthermore, there is also the risk of the police mistaking the good guy with a gun mistakingly shooting him thinking he was the bad guy with a gun or being shot by the mass killer, especially when he has an AR-15 type weapon going up against a pistol or single shot rifle, which is the most likely scenario since few people walk around carrying an AR-15 just in case they meet up with a mass shooter.
However, most important is the fact that with 390 million guns in America, so many "good guys" end up killing far more people through suicides, domestic violence, and accidental shootings. I had two classmates killed accidently in hunting accidents while in grade school. The US per capita gun death rate is far higher than any other developed country's where guns are much more restricted.

In that investigation, KXAN’s team also worked with ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) at Texas State University to compile data collected on 316 mass attacks in the United States since 2000.

While it’s often argued that “only people with guns can stop shooters,” the numbers the KXAN Investigates team found suggest there are multiple outcomes for a mass attack.

According to the data, citizens stopped shooters 50 times in the 316 attacks. But in only 10 out of those 50 incidents did citizens actually stop the shooter by using a gun. The other 40 times, it was with their hands or another weapon.

Here are the stats showing the total number and per capita of gun deaths by country, illustrating that the US stands out by far because of the prevalence of guns compared to other developed countries. The large number of deaths per capita in developing nations is a product of the effects of income inequality leading to violence. This also contributes to the American death by gun problem as it has more severe income inequality than any other developed country. The global map at the following url  that doesn't copy over to Babble further confirms this. If you click on any country on the map you will get its specific gun death statistics. For the US, total firearm deaths is 12.21 per 100,000 with suicides being 7.32 per 100,000, meaning that more than half US gun deaths are suicides that no 'good guy' with a gun is going to stop. As gun suicides are far more likely to result in death than most other forms of suicide attempts and most suicide attempts by individuals are only attempted once in a lifetime by survivors gun suicides further contribute to the death total.
Whenever US police forces try to get mass shootings on international police conferences, they usually fail because other nation's police forces respond they have other serious crime problems that they want to focus on.

Countries with the Highest Total Gun Deaths (all causes) in 2019

  1. Brazil — 49,436
  2. United States — 37,038
  3. Venezuela — 28,515
  4. Mexico — 22,116
  5. India — 14,710
  6. Colombia — 13,169
  7. Philippines — 9,267
  8. Guatemala — 5,980

Nearly nine out of 10 people killed by gun violence in 2019 were men. The highest number of homicide deaths occurred among people 20-24 years old, while the highest number of gun-enabled suicides happened among those aged 55-59. Brazil recorded the world's highest number of total gun deaths from all causes combined, with 49,436 out of 250,227 worldwide. The United States has the second-highest number of gun deaths with 37,038.

That said, if one isolates the violent gun deaths and adjusts for population size by expressing the rate as the number of homicides per 100k people, the list changes significantly.

Countries with the Highest Rates of Violent Gun Death (Homicides) per 100k residents in 2019

  8. U.S. Virgin Islands — 19.40
  9. Puerto Rico — 18.14
  10. Mexico — 16.41

Gun violence in Latin America is exceptionally high, due in no small part to the prevalence of criminal gangs and a vibrant drug trafficking industry. The Inter-American Development Bank released a report highlighting several critical factors in Latin American cities that contribute to increased gun violence, including economic deprivation, residential instability, family disruption, absence from school, the population’s age structure, and alcohol consumption.

Gangs are much less of an issue in the United States, yet it is second only to Brazil on the list in total gun deaths. Many people understandably assume the high number of gun deaths in the U.S. is due to mass shootings, which receive frequent attention from the media. In truth, mass shootings account for only a small percentage of gun deaths in the United States. Rather, nearly two-thirds (63%) of gun deaths in the US in 2019 were suicides.

Countries with the Highest Rates of Firearm-Related Suicide (per 100k) in 2019

  1. Greenland — 16.36
  2. United States — 7.12
  3. Uruguay — 4.74
  4. San Marino — 4.08
  5. Montenegro — 3.40
  6. Argentina — 2.67
  7. Finland — 2.66
  8. Monaco — 2.64
  9. France — 2.64
  10. Venezuela — 2.50

In contrast to the U.S. and Latin America, gun deaths are extremely rare in countries like Japan, the United KingdomNorway, and Australia. These countries have implemented incentives or passed legislation to decrease the number of firearms in circulation. For example, in July 2021, Australia implemented a permanent gun amnesty program, in which unregistered firearms could be anonymously surrendered at police stations.

Japan boasts a population of more than 127 million people, yet finished 2019 with a gun death rate of only .02 per 100,000 people. One major factor in this success is that Japan has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. For Japanese citizens to purchase a gun, they must attend an all-day class, pass a written exam, and complete a shooting range test, scoring at least 95% accuracy. Candidates will also receive a mental health evaluation, performed at a hospital, and will have a comprehensive background check done by the government. Only shotguns and rifles can be purchased. The class and exam must be retaken every three years.

More charts on gun related deaths illustrating the prevalence of guns in the US and its deadly toll:

Chart showing civilian gun ownership around the world

The US ratio of 120.5 firearms per 100 residents, up from 88 per 100 in 2011, far surpasses that of other countries around the world.

More recent data also suggests that gun ownership grew significantly over the last several years. One study, published by the Annals of Internal Medicine in February, found that 7.5 million US adults - just under 3% of the population - became first new gun owners between January 2019 and April 2021.

This, in turn, exposed 11 million people to firearms in their homes, including 5 million children. About half of new gun owners in that time period were women, while 40% were either black or Hispanic.

A separate study, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2021, linked a rise in gun ownership during the pandemic to higher rates of gun injuries among - and inflicted by - children.

How do US gun deaths break down?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of 45,222 people died from gun-related injuries of all causes during 2020, the last year for which complete data is available.

Chart showing a breakdown of gun-related deaths in the US

And while mass shooting and gun murders generally garner more media attention, of the total, 54% - about 24,300 deaths - were suicides.

A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found there was a strong relationship between higher levels of gun ownership in a state and higher firearm suicide rates for both men and women.

Advocates for stricter gun laws in the United States often cite this statistic when pushing lawmakers to devote more resources to mental health and fewer to easing gun restrictions.

How do US gun killings compare with other countries?

In 2020, 43% of the deaths - amounting to 19,384 people - were homicides, according to data from the CDC. The figure represents a 34% increase from 2019, and a 75% increase over the course of the previous decade.

Nearly 53 people are killed each day by a firearm in the US, according to the data.

The data also shows that the vast majority of murders, 79%, were carried out with guns.

That's a significantly larger proportion of homicides than is the case in Canada, Australia, England and Wales, and many other countries.

Graphic showing an international comparison of gun-related killings as a percentage of all homicides in each country. The US leads with nearly 79% of all homicides occurring with guns.

Are mass shootings becoming deadlier?

Deaths from the "mass shootings" that attract international attention, however, are harder to track.

While the country does not have a single definition for "mass shootings", the FBI has for over a decade tracked "active shooter incidents" in which "an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area".

According to the FBI, there were 345 "active shooter incidents" in the United States between 2000-2020, resulting in more than 1,024 deaths and 1,828 injuries.

The deadliest such attack, in Las Vegas in 2017, killed more than 50 people and left 500 wounded. The vast majority of mass shootings, however, leave fewer than 30 people dead.

Chart showing worst mass shootings in US since 1991

Who supports gun control?

Despite widespread and vocal public outrage - often in the wake of gun violence - American support for stricter gun laws in 2020 fell to the lowest level since 2014, according to polling by Gallup

Only 52% of Americans surveyed said they wanted stricter gun laws, while 35% said they should remain the same.

Eleven percent surveyed said laws should be "made less strict".

The issue is also one that is hyper-partisan and extremely divisive, falling largely along party lines.

"Democrats are nearly unanimous in their support for stricter gun laws," the same Gallup study noted, with nearly 91% in favour of stricter gun laws.

Only 24% Republicans, on the other hand, agreed with the same statement, along with 45% of Independent voters.

Chart showing attitudes to gun laws in the US

Some states have taken steps to ban or strictly regulate ownership of assault weapons. Laws vary by state but California, for example, has banned ownership of assault weapons with limited exceptions.

Map showing states with assault weapon restrictions, April 2022Presentational white space

Some controls are widely supported by people across the political divide - such as restrictions governing the sale of guns to people who are mentally ill or on "watch" lists.

Who opposes gun control?

Despite years of financial woes and internal strife, the National Rifle Association (NRA) remains the most powerful gun lobby in the United States, with a substantial budget to influence members of Congress on gun policy.

In January, the NRA filed for bankruptcy as part of a fraud case against some of its own senior staff. Even after the move, it vowed to continue "confronting anti-Second Amendment activities, promoting firearm safety and training, and advancing public programs across the United States".

Over the last several election cycles, it, and other organisations, have consistently spent more on pro-gun rights messaging than their rivals in the gun control lobby.

Chart showing spending by gun rights and gun control groups. Updated 8 April 2021

A number of states have also gone as far as to largely eliminate restrictions on who can carry a gun. In June 2021, for example, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed into law a "permitless carry bill" that allows the state's residents to carry handguns without a license or training.

Similarly, on 12 April Georgia became the 25th in the nation to eliminate the need for a permit to conceal or openly carry a firearm. The law means any citizen of that state has the right to carry a firearm without a licence or a permit.

The law was backed by the NRA, and leaders within the organisation called the move "a monumental moment for the Second Amendment".

Unless every US citizen is carrying a gun in those examples that graph is not a useful tool to support your argument. If every citizen present for every one of those mass shootings was armed then you could be looking at 90% stopped by civilians.

In my example, the active shooter killed 3 people then was shot and killed himself by someone with a gun. According to the police had the guy not shot the mass shooter then they expected many more deaths.

Some good comparative info at this site too. The scary part is looking at the age differences and how high the suicide numbers increase dramatically as Japanese people get older.

People get inventive when they can't just go out and buy a gun. Detergent works well and is way cheaper too. It does pose significant risks for the people who find the bodies.
